I arrived in Nienburg on a bitterly cold day in early February 1973. It was my second posting and had been a Lance Jack for 18 months. I was sent to HQ Tp MT, and moved into a 6 man room in HQ lines. Fred Bateman, Eric Flavell, Mal Forder, Mompo? and Dennis? (sorry I forget names these days) were my room mates. My first duty as Sqn Duty NCO came rather quickly, I was on duty one very snowy Friday evening, and in those days Sat Morning was, I recall, normal works. During the early hours of Saturday a shadowy figure entered the orderly Cpl,s office and informed me there was trouble in 1 and 2 Troops lines and I should go and sort it out. Off I went to investigate, but found everything quite normal. Come morning I could not find the Sqn flag to raise prior to muster parade. When the SSM entered the office I told him I,d lost the flag. \"Not to worry lad I know where it is. Come with me.\" We went outside side and there is was half-way up the Star Net tower. Mac Mc Guiness had intended to put it the top, but it was too cold and only made half way before deciding enough was enough. the trouble in 1 and 2 Troops lines had been a trick to get me out of the office.
Jerboa bar was there when I arrived in 1970 and going strong when I left in 75. I did some nasty rumours that the Army were going to either do away with all Sqn bars/or move them downstairs to the cellars for some health and safety matters. Hopefully some of the later serving members can squash that ugly rumour.
