I was in Sqn 72-77, great times, good to see all the photos, a few of us meet up at Sapperfest each year, Trev Mitchell, Splash, Mike Raw, Ken Barry and others. Come and join us. Hope you are all doing well.
I was with 4Sqn 79-84 3tp and Hq tp, I'm still in contact with one or two of the lads, hoping to get back to Nienburg for the first time this spring or summer to bring back some fab memorises.

It's great to hear some old names from years ago I served with one troop from 76/79 I remember willy weeks phil barber and a few more I didn't know this site was around really great to read I whent back over 30years really tidy
At last I find a site for 4Sqn.well done.
I have found a couple of faces on the site,Earnie Stenninger, Tony Sear and I`m pretty sure a guy by the name of Ellis.
I dont have any pics to offer guys on account the missus destroyed every thing when we split up back in the 70s, one of the reasons I looked for a site like this one, hoping to see my ugly mush on one of your pics, no luck yet though.

I was in 3 troop from feb 64 until sometime in 67. MT NOCO before getting posted to Barton Stacey where I took over from a guy by the name of Brown as Brigs driver

My favorite mate in 3 troop was Black Jack Vowells, but then every one loved him! Our troopy at one point was Campbell-Ellen
Well hello there you ex war heroes well at least we kept the Russians back..... I was there 1967 to 1971 started off as MT storeman with Dick Goss then eventualy went to NI as a member of 1 troop with Andy Wilson section cpl. What a place for drink Nienburg was especialy if you got talking to a crout in the Flats, all part of the learning curve. glad to hear from anyone especialy those who owe me money.

any one from 4 fld sqn re 1968 1970
Ref note 44 & 50 Bernie Baldwin
Bernie could have been an ex boy, the vintage is about right. I cannot confirm his where abouts but Jersey sounds about right. To all you "old Rats" out there .... all the best
For Joe Ellis - I've heard that Bernie Baldwin now lives Channel Islands but no other info. I served with him in Boys Service
hello John i am glad that you still remember what I taught you all those years ago. Do you remember when we had to build a Heavy Girder overbridge, and we built it in a quicker time that 1st sqn with only a section of 8 men.
you must have had a good time driving Capt. Raffles, did he make you play rugby as well.
hope you are well
Colin (Jock) Moir
Hi there, This is a message for Jock Moir,
Iremember Jock Moir from Nienburg, I was there from2/March/1962. He was once given the task of taking a few of us younger lads into the woods on a night to teach us how "to listen" the method was to stand very still, cock your head to one side, mouth open and eyes closed. Apparently this was the way to do it.
The one thing I really remember about Jock was that he liked his beer.
My name is John Thomas, Iwas there at the same time as Albert Smith from Middlesborough(who I believe transfered to the REME) Dave Thomas(who now lives in France and Phil Stopford (one of the last National service lads.
I was transfered to HQRE and was Captain Raffles driver.
hi Beef.....just read Mike Rustons book " our lad ricky " ....Brilliant...I was at cove 6 years after him
,,boy did he dig up some old memories for me .....a must read for all cove-ites....

Nice site. Would be interested in any info re Brian J Forbes please. He was at Fallingbostel with your Sqn in 1960 where I visited ex 26 Sqn Hohne. Your Sqn cookhouse had been taken over by a Yank mob. Brian was also an ex boy (1956-58) where we served together at Malta Barracks, Aldershot

I played Rugby will Major Mound, both in Germany and during our tour of Lurgan in 74-75, he was a great chap and so easy going, always treated you as an equal on the field, maybe he didnt like the hard tackles....
hi beef i have just seen a blast from the past as i was in 4SQN from 1958 to 1961 and jock Moir and i where in 3 troop together
Came across the site by chance, great to have something like this. i was in the sqn around 76 to 79. i was sqn barmen for a time after harry tarrentook ( spelt wrong ). i recognised a few faces in the pics, alan gate being one, and paddy smythe ( smooth) the other. keep up the great work, hope theres some kind of reunion soon.
Served in 4 Field between 1974-1977, glad to see this site up and running, I have been in touch with several ex Nienburg posse, including Steve Wall, Phil Barber, Sid Seymour and Monty McGuiness. I have been living in Northern Ireland since 1979, just couldn't get enough of the place Ha Ha. My job is software development producing business applications. I am still married (34 years) with 2 sons and 2 granddaughters.
now back in the land of the living so would appreciate it if trev mitchell would contact me again on new email address also if anyone else who was in 4 sqn at the same time (70-73) wants to get in touch that would be great
Mr Mound was also one of my troop Officers in 39 Sqn in the 60s so it was great meeting him again in 4 Sqn. While in 39 he was part of the boxing team. He was out classed but I never saw a braver fight any where.
Re: Post 25 (Trev Mitchell)
Could that have been Mike Mound? He was the OC during the Lurgan Tour 74/75. He is living in that part of the world - last heard.
you have a very good web site also youe other web site is very interesting cheers keep up the good work from tam edinburgh branch of rea

A reunion would be an excellent idea Im up for it.
Well as we seem to have a fair number of members, what about a reunion?
Whilst having a break at Hopwood Park services today (22nd May) I saw what I thought was a familiar looking face. I approached said face and asked if he had served in the Engineers he replied yes, I asked him if he was OC 4 Sqn again he replied yes, it was Maj Micheal Mahn/Mann ? The rugby playing OC from 1971? Obviously retired now and living not far from the Schoo of Infantry at Warminster. Small world eh?
